| Once again I cannot help myself but to comment here on how much I enjoyed one of Theroux’s books. Mr. Theroux has found himself in many desolate and lonely places in his extensive traveling but none that can compare to the separation from his wife. I am aware that this book is a work of fiction but I couldn’t help but to read it as if it where nonfiction. The emotional rollercoaster that he is writing about, however much he might have fictionalized the details, is being written by someone who has gone through the experiences first hand. It is an often sad but mostly insightful story, a pleasure to read the work from the mind of someone who has the ability to articulate and analyze a pivotal time in his life. There is a chapter in the book where Theroux’s alter ego (a German writer who’s life uncannily parallels Theroux) is having dinner with his wife and you come to understand that this is there farewell meal together. The book is worth reading for these pages alone. He runs the full gamut of emotions, at once showing the sadness in reflection as well as the bitterness of blame, regret and the general shittieness of ending a relationship after many years. Poignant, entertaining and often touching - it is a pleasure to read such well-written books. |
