I found this by "accident" while lusting after my tropical vacation that I wanted to turn into a real life 'Mosquito Coast' story. After I read it, I was floored by reality and honsty. I still lust after this dream of mine...the south seas 'escape'.

My first Theroux read also. I am just taken by his ability to place you there...I'm in Fiji right now. I had to skip and read the last visit to the Big Island since I had just returned from there and I am considering a move there in the next two years. It was strange that I picked up this book, and at a crossroads in life were you're bout to do something so different...and there it was ... the Big Island ... the anchor of the book with a powerful message.

Paul lives part time in Hawaii...if only I could pick his brain even more.

Whats your take on the last line of the book..."Being happy was like being home"?

I think it is as simple as it sounds. He was happy and felt at home. He was starting a new chapter or part in his life and the period of his travels for this book were difficult times for him. I asked him about this book at his Seattle book tour/signing recently and he stated that this period was a "difficult time in my life". He also did not do this trip in one shot like Dark Star, my bet is he spent much more time in hawaii between theother islands...I did not ask him that though.
