I have never had a book compel me to eat healthier in my whole life. That being said, I found this novel to be very much in the Theroux formula of story telling and especially in comparison to Mosquito Coast. Here is the young teenage narrator swept up in the whirlwind of the protagonist or the all-encompassing father figure who crosses the line of obsessive compulsive throughout the story. I liked the philosophy behind Millroy, where it seems that Theroux is actually inventing, in the very least, a cult, and at times a religion. Theroux mentions Jones Town in a couple of his previous books (Sir Vidia’s Shadow, Kingdom by the Sea??) and I like the way he explores the cult mentality in the sense of a sort of surrogate family. The story, at its best, plays with the rampant unhealthiness and general obesity of Americans and at its worst, assumes that the reader can relate to hours of TV evangelism and children’s puppet shows (I’ve never seen either… accept the Muppet Show a couple of times). The story is thoughtful and often satirical while giving us the feeling that it all might just be a slight of hand or maybe real authentic magic.
