the current issue of the New Yorker has a travel piece by Theroux. He goes to Turkmenistan.
In the author bios at the front it also says, "He is working on a travel book retracing the journey he wrote about, more than thirty years ago, in 'The Great Railway Bazaar'".
anyone know more?? Erinn?? |

Since you asked me directly.....
He definitely is putting out a book next fall (2008) that will be a sequel to his first travelogue The Great Railway Bazaar. He was more than a little annoyed that amazon has had incorrect information "for sale" on their website (you can pre-order it) and his new book will definitely NOT be called The Cold World. I don't know if it has a name yet. The Elephanta Suite will be avail this fall (2007), as I have listed on my site and is pre-orderable. There have been a few articles published, some during his interim and some since he finished the journey- he did it in two parts from what I can gather. The new New Yorker article is one of a few that discuss some of the issues he encountered/learned more about while on his journey. -erinn |

thanks for the info! and thanks for this website too, it's nice to find others who share my admiration for Theroux. I only met him once, at a reading in 95 when I was just back from Peace Corps myself. He seemed very interested when I told him I was just returned - wish we had talked more.
best
