I don't know about anyone else, but I picked this up again, after finishing the excellent Blinding Light, and yet again, half way through I lost interest.
Is it just me, or does anyone feel the same?
Maybe it's because I'm from the UK,and Hawai doesn't say much to me. |

I haven't read blinding light (just read The Stranger at pallazo de ord) but I liked Hotel Honolulu probably the best out of his fiction novels.
I liked the way it branched off onto little side stories and he assumes the role of an observer mostly with all of these incidents occuring around him. It was not just the same story of one person being laboured along as he has not much of interest his life in this position as manager.
Similarly I like how My Secret life is segmented into different sections of intrest adding depth to the story without increasing the bulk. It sort of reminds me of the two stories of huckleberry finn and tom sawyer. The way two stories are similar in content but with different perspective is refreshing to me.
I thought it would be hard to get bored reading this book as there are so many funny stories which are short to read, yet they all glue together in the end despite their disparate begginings.
I also dont think it's difficult to understand his portrayal of Hawaiian life and the humour involved but that might be because im used to the sun and tourists and as I spent some time as a live in hotel manager in the tropics. It does set a good stage for jokes and hotel humour and also seems to be a escape for the protaganist from writing and educated society. Also another chance to demontrate the fatigues and pleasures of writers block which seems to be a running theme.
I dont know maybe this all sound like a load of bs but I couldn't lose interest in it because each story seemed new and was easy to get through. Sounds like im a pre schooler reading back on that sentence but I don't care I enjoyed it, give it another go. |
